Thank you for visiting our fly tying blog! Here you will find free step by step instructions for fly patterns, that we have found to be very successful while fishing on the Tributaries of Lake Erie known as " Steelhead Alley". You will also be able to see step by step instructions for warm water, tube, trout, and Destinational fly patterns. Sculpin/Goby Pattern: Senyo's Sculpin

Senyo's Sculpin tied for the Orvis Company and published in the Orvis News.

Step #1: Attach 6/0 Uni thread to Any Up turn black salmon hook, and wind toward rear of hook to just before hook point.

Step #2: Attach an upside down piece of dark olive 1/8 rabbit strip 2 inches long to rear of hook and secure.

Step #3: Attach 10 strands of Rainbow Flashabou over the rabbit strip, matching the length of the tail and secure.

Step #4: Dub an even body with Hareline peacock black Ice dub, leaving just alittle more than 1/4 of an inch in front of hook eye.

Step #5: Attach two olive grizzly marabou feathers to each side of the fly body, and the length of the feathers should just reach the front of the tail.

Step #6: Trim stems and excess marabou feather and secure.

Step #7: Pinch a large clump of Hareline's Peacock Black Ice Dub, and spread the center causing it to create a V in the material. Next you place the material through the hook with the V toward the wing. At this time the material should cover all the way around the hook.

Step #8: Make 12 tight securing wraps in the center of the Ice dub. Fold material back and bring thread to front of hook and apply securing wraps. ( Depending on how much dubbing you use this step may need repeated if to much space is left in front of hook eye.)

Step #9: Brush out all remaining loose Ice dubbing with a dubbing brush or a small wire brush, and form a small thread head. Whip finish or half hitch and cut off the thread.

Final: Trim Ice dubbing to form flat or tapered wide head. This pattern has become a standard in my fly box for Steelhead Alley. Pattern fishes well when alot of timber and/or debris is present in the pools and should be fished deep right on the bottom of the river where sculpins and gobies can be found.

Minnow Pattern- Senyo's Ice Man Minnow

Tied as published in Matt Supinski's December 2007 article in Fly Fisherman Magazine.
Step #1: Attach White Uni Thread 6/0 to a Diiachi X120 #10
Wind thread to center of hook.
Step #2: Take a small amount of Flo. Pink Hareline Ice Dub and tie in center, so that even material sticks out both sides and secure to center of hook.

Step #3: With you free hand fold front section of ice Dub back over the top of rear exposed Ice Dub, and then give a few securing wraps of thread in front of the material. This forms the under belly of the minnow.

Step #4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 with a Hareline UV pearl Ice Dubbing. and secure thread in front of material. This section is the under wing and becomes the body of the minnow.

Step #5: Repeat steps 2 and 3 again this time with Hareline Steely Blue Ice Dubbing. This becomes the back on the minnow and finishes forming the fly body. Secure material with a few wraps of thread in front of material.

Step #6: Build a tapered head with your thread in front of the completed body. This will become the section were your eyes will be glued to in next step. With your tying scissors trim the rear of the wings to form an even minnow taper.( see photo above)

Step #7: Whip finish or half hitch thread in front of hook eye and cut thread. Second place one 3d prismatic Chartreuse eye or equivalent on each side of thread head you created, and secure with Zap A Gap or epoxy.( allow time to dry)

Final step: With a Sharpe red permanent marker make visible gill plates behind both eyes. The minnow is finished. This fast and practical minnow can be tied in several color combos to match any water condition, and is extremely effective on steelhead alley.

Tube Fly- Simple Egg Stealing Leech

Step #1: Take a Salmon size egg bead (8mm) and drill out hole with 3/32 drill. Slide bead onto a 1.5 inch piece of Eumer Clear Small tubing. With Pink Uni 6/0 thread form an even thread base to slide bead onto. Note: Leave small amount of tubing exposed in front of bead.
Step #2: Add a drop of Zap A Gap to the thread base. Cut the thread and slide bead into position. Tie on Black Uni Thread 6/0 and wind to rear of tubing, leaving roughly 1/4 inch exposed for silicon connection tube.

Step #3: Attach a piece of 2 inch 1/8 cut Rabbit zonker strip and secure.( Add a drop of Zap A Gap for durability- optional.)

Step #4: Attach a 3 inch piece of black cross cut rabbit strip and secure.

Step #5: Wind the cross cut strip forward evenly around tube, leaving roughly a 1/4 inch in front of egg bead and secure.

Step #6: Attach 10 strands of Rainbow Flashabou over top of the black cross cut rabbit body. Second add a single plume of purple marabou. The feather should be folded around tube and extend to the base of the tail before securing.

Step #7: Form an even thread head and apply a small amount of Zap A Gap with a needle to the thread. Cut the tying thread and allow time to dry.

Final step: Melt tubing in front of bead evenly to the egg. attach a 1/2 inch piece of silicone tubing to the rear exposed tube and insert hook.( Diiachi X510 #8 shown here)
